Expansion of the Multiuser Laboratory Infrastructure for Chemistry Research

Abstract

The Annual Plan for the Application of Institutional Infrastructure Technical Reserve (RTI) focused on the submission of the current budget proposal emphasizes support for the collective research infrastructure at Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie (UPM). This project includes the presentation of the proposal's objectives, an assessment of the current situation of the beneficiaries, an execution timeline, and a detailed list of the fundable items requested for this investment, which will primarily be allocated for the renovation of the facilities of the Multiuser Research Laboratory in Chemistry, housed within the traditional Mackenzie School of Engineering. This renovation will allow the installation of new research equipment and ensure the proper use of the equipment already part of the multiuser environment. Initially, it is considered important to present a brief institutional overview, covering the history, influence, and impact of this University on the Brazilian educational landscape. Mackenzie is a century-old institution, traditionally excelling in both basic and higher education. However, a little over 25 years ago, Instituto Presbiteriano Mackenzie (IPM), the institution that maintains Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, made the strategic decision to also become a reference in the areas of stricto sensu postgraduate programs, scientific and technological research, and more recently, innovation. This decision was followed by a robust and continuous institutional effort, which included hiring a substantial number of PhD professors with research profiles and establishing postgraduate programs in virtually all major fields of study at the university. Today, UPM has 12 postgraduate programs, two of which hold the highest rating in the CAPES evaluation; two have a rating of 6; three have a rating of 5; and four have a rating of 4, with one program still awaiting evaluation. The strategic decision also led to a vigorous investment in laboratory and instrumental infrastructure, especially in the fields of Engineering and Biological Sciences, which require such infrastructure. This investment was largely funded by IPM itself, but it was also significantly complemented by public and private resources obtained by UPM research professors through funding agencies, such as FAPESP, and partner companies. In this context, the institution presents an annual budget execution plan with the goal of expanding and adapting the working conditions of the facilities that make up the Multiuser Research Laboratory in Chemistry.
