EMU: Acquisition of equipment to update the multi-user laboratory (LANA) for animal nutrition studies

Abstract

The challenge of intensifying Brazilian agriculture consists of maintaining ecosystem balance, increasing productivity, producing high-quality food in terms of nutrition and food security, and reducing deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, the objective of this proposal is to update and expand the Animal Nutrition Laboratory (LANA) at FCAV/UNESP Jaboticabal, through the acquisition of a set of modern equipment, essential for the adaptation and improvement of analyzes involving animal nutrition, with seen in research at the frontier of knowledge in sustainable intensification, which can benefit local research groups and other regional, national and international institutions. The team involved in the Animal Science area at UNESP, Jaboticabal campus, has high potential in generating knowledge and training human resources, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Additionally, this presents several partnerships with companies aimed at generating knowledge and technologies that aim to contribute to the development of products and technologies aimed at sustainable animal production. However, the current structure needs updating and some equipment needs to be acquired to improve studies in animal nutrition, which will benefit several departments of the institution in question and will create opportunities for other national and international research groups that are eager to refine research. generated in this area of science. Significant advances in the knowledge of ruminant and non-ruminant nutrition have been observed in recent decades, and the time has come to modernize the Animal Nutrition Laboratory (LANA) at FCAV/UNESP Jaboticabal, as most of the current equipment met demands from other times. . With greater refinement of demands, and the emergence of precision animal nutrition, FCAV needs to adapt to remain at the forefront in terms of research in animal nutrition in Brazil and abroad. It should be noted that the proposal aims to acquire a set of modern equipment, essential for the adaptation and improvement of animal nutrition analyses, which involves greenhouse gas analyzes of excreta and soil, rumenology (rumen fermentation, genomic sequencing, short-chain fatty acid profile), characterization of products used in animal nutrition and combustion elemental nitrogen analyzer. Therefore, this proposal is in line with the current demands for methodological refinement to support increasingly robust data acquired in FCAV's LANA multi-user laboratory, with a view to providing broader service to the Unit itself and other institutions.
