Abstract

Measuring the energy involved in physical and chemical transformations is a primary source of data to understand a large variety of fundamental processes. A wide area of knowledge makes use of calorimetric methods, whether to evaluate the stabilities of substances and materials of different natures, or to evaluate temperature-induced transitions. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is capable of measuring with great precision variations in energy involved in phase transition and decomposition processes, while thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) precisely tracks weight changes with temperature. Both techniques offer crucial insights for optimizing materials with tailored properties, essential for advancements in materials science. The Institute of Chemistry of UNICAMP has a long tradition in research involving new materials, catalysts, polymers, supramolecular aggregates, and drug development, in which DSC and simultaneous thermogravimetric (TGA) and differential thermal analyses (DTA) are indispensable techniques. As will be presented in the project, part of the equipment used for this purpose is obsolete. Thus, the acquisition of a calorimeters such as a DSC and a high sensitivity DSC and a simultaneous TGA/DTA analyzer will allow for the renewal of these instruments at our Institute, assuring the excellence of the thermal analysis facility to be maintained and expanded.
