EMU: Acquisition of a Stationary Ergospirometer for Cardiorespiratory Functional Assessment Applied to Chronic Diseases, Aging and Sports Performance.

Abstract

Introduction: The assessment of physical fitness through cardiorespiratory functional testing, using ergometers and metabolic analysers, represents a "gold standard" protocol to accurately quantify an individual's ability to use oxygen to produce energy in the face of increasing imposed resistance. The results of this exam are valuable in the diagnosis of diseases (cardiovascular, respiratory, and metabolic), therapeutic prescription, and in evaluating the performance of athletes. In turn, the application of cardiorespiratory functional assessment protocols in research is even more important, since it is essential to obtain accurate ventilation and metabolic parameters, which allows broad correlations with the most varied lines of clinical research and sports performance. In this case, the acquisition of complete multi-user cardiorespiratory functional assessment equipment will meet a growing demand from different research groups on the campus of the University of São Paulo in Ribeirão Preto and the region, which until then could not include the collection of ventilatory and metabolic processes obtained appropriately, with expertise and protocols available. Objectives: Strengthen the Multi-User Laboratory Center at the Ribeirão Preto Medical School, offering campus researchers and other researchers in the region a Cardiorespiratory Functional Assessment Laboratory to obtain ventilatory and metabolic parameters in the most varied lines of research.
