Scientific EMU: Acquisition of a flow cytometer for the Multi-User Flow Cytometry and Biochemical Testing Laboratory (LMCB) of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences-USP

Abstract

Flow cytometry is a technology that has increasingly stood out in research and is responsible for several advances in science. Its application is not limited to a single area of knowledge, and can be used in the areas of immunology, hematology, genetics, cell biology, microbiology, parasitology, oceanography, in studies of new drugs and stem cell therapies, among many others. Its ability to analyze several parameters simultaneously in a single cell makes it a method of choice for multiparametric analysis of cell populations. In addition to being a technique also applied in the separation or purification of a certain cell population from a heterogeneous suspension, a process called sorting. Therefore, flow cytometry today reaches a vast number of researchers in the areas of biological sciences and health and there is an increasing need for more powerful equipment, which makes it possible to reach new parameters that bring more specific results, a current requirement of analysis of flow cytometry. The flow cytometer in use at the Multi-User Laboratory of Flow Cytometry and Biochemical Assays (LMCB), BD FACS CANTOII, is obsolete, which makes our assays very limited. Therefore, our request is necessary for the acquisition of more modern and accurate device, which will allow the entire scientific community at USP or abroad to carry out tests with more internationally competitive results.
