Development of Educational Experiments in Microbial Biochemistry

Abstract

Science is driven by knowledge, critical thinking, and innovation. Connecting the scientific knowledge gained through research to the foundation of elementary and high school education is essential to spark students' interest in science and academic pursuits. However, many students lack access to adequate resources, such as well-equipped laboratories. The partnership between universities and schools can encourage the formation of new scientists. The goal of this project is to develop kits for conducting educational experiments focused on teaching the biochemistry of microorganisms in high school. Two kits will be created: one on the structure and function of biomolecules and another on microorganisms and biotechnology. In addition, educational and audiovisual materials will be produced and translated into Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS) to support learning and the use of the kits. The developed materials will be validated by teachers and adjusted for kit preparation. As a final step, a demonstration workshop and training will be conducted for teachers to apply the kits in schools. In line with the research on the production of natural dyes by microorganisms, the kits will develop the basic knowledge needed to stimulate interest in research in this area. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Araraquara Center for Sciences, aiming to give back to society the knowledge produced at the university and demonstrate the importance of scientific foundations in advancing research.
