Food, food systems, politics and development issues in Brazil

Abstract

This activity plan is part of the thematic project "Healthy food environments and childhood and adolescent obesity: understanding and overcoming the challenges to implementing the most effective public policies." The research activities proposed here are an extension of the study and research program "Food, Politics, and Development," developed by the Visiting Researcher since 2021 at their home institution. The program is expected to progress through the research to be carried out during the period of the requested grant, by means of interactions with teams from the Host Institution, other institutes in São Paulo, and researchers affiliated with the Josué de Castro Chair on Healthy and Sustainable Food Systems, in addition to interviews with specialists from academic and research institutions, social organizations, government agencies, and the private sector. The main expected outcome is a sole-authored book, provisionally titled Food, Politics, and Development in Brazil: Inequalities, Hunger, and Democracy, structured around three thematic axes and a concluding component: (1) hunger, food, and politics in Brazil's historical trajectory; (2) the focus on food politics and the case of Brazil; (3) food, politics, and development; and (4) strengths and weaknesses of the Brazilian experience.
