Demonstrative Multifunctional Forests to Support the Program ReflorestaSP (DemonstraSP)

Abstract

In the field of forestry science, the search for support to create environmental public policies in the state of São Paulo has been a collaborative effort between public managers and researchers. This collaboration has been crucial, for instance, in the ReflorestaSP program-a government initiative that brings together state public managers and scientists from São Paulo universities to restore the native vegetation of the state. However, many issues still require coordinated, systematic, and long-lasting action for the program's success. This proposal offers a strategy that not only expands, strengthens, and consolidates the collaboration between public managers and São Paulo researchers in forest restoration but also aims to enhance forest management and in-depth research in experimental and demonstrative areas of multifunctional forests located at the University of São Paulo's two Experimental Stations (Anhembi and Itatinga). These areas will serve as a foundation for knowledge generation, the training of new researchers, and the capacity building of rural producers. The proposal will support three major areas: maintaining the experimental areas, deepening the understanding of the silvicultural and ecological interactions of the different implemented models, and developing a database and LIDAR survey that will directly connect to ReflorestaSP. The origin of the demand is anchored in commitments made by the Government of the State of São Paulo, coordinated by the Secretariat of Environment, Infrastructure, and Logistics (SEMIL). This demand originates from political processes promoting actions aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change (Climate Action Plan - Net Zero 2050 and São Paulo Environmental Agreement). The target audience for this proposal mainly consists of rural landowners, professionals involved in restoration and legal reserve (RL) and permanent preservation area (APP) recomposition, and extension workers who support producers in the field.
