HUMAN RESOURCES TRAINING PROGRAM IN OIL EXPLORATION AND RESERVOIR GEOLOGY

Abstract

The PRH-ANP 19.1 - Oil Exploration and Reservoir Geology program is a human resources training initiative based at the Institute of Geosciences, University of Campinas (IG-UNICAMP). Recognized for its scientific excellence and infrastructure in hydrocarbon geology and geotechnology, IG-UNICAMP was awarded a PRH (Human Resources Program) for the first time during the second cycle of the program (2019-2024). Throughout this cycle, the program demonstrated outstanding performance, as evidenced by the quality of research outputs, high employability of graduates, academic accolades, and a high scholarship occupancy rate. This success was further bolstered by numerous projects funded through the ANP's RD&I (Research, Development, and Innovation) clause, which facilitated direct collaboration between students and leading energy sector companies, including Petrobras, Shell, Equinor, BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies, Petrogal, and Sinopec. The program achieved second place in the ANP's performance evaluation, with a final score of 9.75, solidifying its position as the leading program in geology (https://unicamp.br/noticias/2024/11/21/programa-de-formacao-do-instituto-de-geociencias-fica-em-2o-lugar-em-ranking-da-anp/).During the 2019-2024 cycle, the program focused on the following thematic areas: (i) Geotechnologies applied to hydrocarbon reservoir studies; (ii) Heterogeneity and depositional architecture of oil reservoirs; (iii) Study, monitoring, and management of hydrocarbon-contaminated areas; (iv) Reservoir characterization and geological modeling; (v) Geotechnology in reservoir studies; (vi) Paleontology applied to the oil industry; (vii) Geological carbon capture and storage; and (viii) Exploratory geophysics. For the upcoming cycle, a new thematic line will be introduced, aligned with ANP priorities: (ix) Strategic minerals for the energy sector. Additionally, the program will emphasize reservoir studies in new exploratory frontiers, such as Brazil's Equatorial Margin, further enhancing its relevance to the evolving energy landscape. (AU)
