From Local to Global: Empowering Future Scientists through Transdisciplinary Approaches to Coastal Conflict Transformation

Abstract

The project is part of the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, focusing on the transformation of marine socio-environmental conflicts into more sustainable scenarios. Recognizing that conflicts in coastal zones involve disputes over rights, access, and the distribution of nature's benefits, the project aims to align local actions with global agendas, particularly along the coast of São Paulo. The research seeks to identify pathways for transforming these conflicts through collaborative and transdisciplinary approaches, analyzing the role of biodiversity and ecosystem services in both the intensification of conflicts and the possibilities for transitioning toward sustainability. The proposal also aims to promote processes of social learning and strengthen institutional mechanisms for coastal governance, with an emphasis on traditional fishing communities. In addition, the project focuses on training early-career undergraduate researchers, offering hands-on experience in transdisciplinary research and encouraging their engagement in academic careers grounded in real-world coastal challenges.
