From local to global: transdisciplinary processes to transform conflicts in the coastal zone

Abstract

The coastal zone is a territory where socio-environmental conflicts manifest themselves locally and reflect deep struggles over property, rights, distribution and sharing of nature's benefits, often threatening the survival of coastal communities. In this way, aligning research and local government actions with global challenges for sustainable development and the fight against climate and biodiversity crises in a transdisciplinary way adds value to the production of knowledge and use of scientific results. These processes strengthen participatory socio-environmental governance and allow for the implementation of transformative changes for a sustainable transition, including more viable and fair scenarios based on co-production strategies that legitimize and strengthen the participation of traditional communities, academia and civil society organizations and public authorities and private. The general objective of this proposal is to co-produce paths for transforming marine socio-environmental conflicts into more sustainable scenarios in the three regions of the coast of São Paulo, aligning local actions with global demands, and specifically: i) Identifying possibilities for transforming cases of socio-environmental conflicts marine for fairer and more sustainable scenarios on the coast of São Paulo and its alignment with the indicators of the global agendas; (ii) analyze how existing institutional arrangements can institute and formalize practices for transforming conflicts built collaboratively, (iii) investigate the role of the quality of ecosystem services/biodiversity in the intensification of socio-environmental conflicts and in the transition to sustainability and (iv ) promote social learning processes generated with actions and mobilizations aimed at transforming conflicts towards sustainability. Finally, we also aim to v) promote, based on dialogic approaches, institutional mechanisms applicable to the governance of marine protected areas in line with global agendas, capable of reducing pressure on natural resources, reducing threats and increasing the well-being of traditional communities fisheries.
