Abstract
The mortality for NTCD in the MSP has decreasing less than in the State of São Paulo as a whole. The population current exposure to RF for NTCD is unknown, since the last determination (and less comprehensive than this proposal) occurred in 1987. Study design: cross-sectional survey, with a population-based random sample. Methods: a two-phase clustering sample drawn from six homogeneous socio-environmental areas and 100 census sectors within the MSP. People of both genders aged 15-59 years are to be included. Pregnant women will be excluded. In order to obtain a sample size of at least 1,700 individuals, 2.100 households are to be visited, one person per household being selected. All selected individuals who agree to participate will respond an interviewer-administered questionnaire, and will have their blood pressure, and height, weight, waist and hip measures taken. In a systematic sub-sample of at least 500 individuals an additional questionnaire on nutrition habits is to be administered, and peripheral blood determinations of glucose, total cholesterol and triglycerides are to be done. A quality control supervision on interview conduction, data codification and data entry is to be performed. (AU)
