Brazil and the periphery in the age of globalization: unconvertible currency, outmoded production, regimes of economic and development policies

Abstract

The aim of this project is to investigate the implications of the contemporary economic context to the choice of macroeconomic and development policies, particularly under the conditions prevailing in the Brazilian economy, which will be compared to those prevailing in other Latin-americam and asiatic peripheral countries. The research activity will take place according to six sub-projects. Two of them, more general will study macroeconomic policy in developed countries and both economic policy regimes and development policies in peripheral countries. The other four projects, all concerned with peripheral countries, will concentrate on such themes as a) the combination between financial openness and exchange rate regimes; b) monetary policy, interest rates and exchange rates; c) fiscal policies after the 90s crises and d) an econometric analysis of the relation of real exchange rate changes and external accounts.
