Abstract

The objective of the present project is to study the interaction of surface and sub-surface phenomena associated with wear from corrosion, that is, the corrosion-wear synergism. To achieve this, partial objectives could be identified as: to produce and characterize three types of wear surfaces: hardened surfaces, surfaces on which the formation of alpha-martensite formed and surfaces on which epsilon martensite formed; to characterize the behavior of the corrosion of the three types of surface produced in the previous item as to active and passive behavior, particularly with regard to generalized corrosion, repassivation and localized corrosion; to study the effect of the combined corrosion-wear action testing the materials in conditions in which there occurs simultaneously martensitic transformation (or high hardening) with high and low levels of repassivation, generalized corrosion and passive and active behavior.
