Abstract

Development, cellular differentiation and adaptation to environmental conditions of organisms are processes that require the coordinated expression of functionally related genes. During seed development of higher plants, the expression of seed storage protein genes and genes for enzymes involved in amino acid metabolism, represent an interesting model for studying the mechanisms of coordinated gene expression. The main objective of the project presented hereafter is to carry on with studies on coordinated regulation of the expression of. genes related to seed storage protein synthesis and Iysine metabolism. Studies aimed at identifying and characterizing new regulatory aspects of the expression of these genes will be undertaken. These studies will also give support to establish strategies for expressing heterologous proteins in seeds. The improvement of an expression cassette for the accumulation of heterologous proteins in seeds will be one of our objectives. The expression of human growth hormone and insulin in tobacco and corn seeds will be tested. (AU)
