Abstract

The main objective of this proposal project is the revision of the paleobotanical and palynological data from fossiliferous occurrences already known, as well as the systematic study of new localities and materiais from surface and subsurface sampling from the Permo-Carboniferous Tubarão Group, Paraná Basin, in the São Paulo State.Based on this study, it is expect to: obtain a better constrain of the (macro and micro) tafofloristic composition of each locality, establish the paleofloristic succession; propose a biostratigraphic correlation; determine the age of the assemblages; identify the biochronostratigraphic markers for the C-P boundary; carry out paleoecological, paleogeographic and paleoclimatic interpretations; contribute to the fossiliferous documentation of São Paulo State. The project will comprehend field work, laboratory analyses, graphic (photographic) documentation, presentation and publication of the results in scientific meetings and journals. We believe this study will help to establish the most complete Upper Carboniferous-Lower Permian paleofloristic sequence of the Paraná Basin in São Paulo State, where the sedimentary record of the Tubarão Group is better represented; containing rocks from the Westphalian to the Kungurian ages. Many foreign researchers, who have outstanding knowledge on the Upper Palaeozoic phytochronostratigraphic problems at a global scale, will be envolved in this proposal project. The interaction with these scientists will allow a more accurate comparasion between Brazilian data and other global occurrences, as well as the update of the Brazilian researchers. The results of the paleobotanical and palynological studies in the Tubarão Group are extremely important to the geosciences, not to mention the surface and subsurface lithofaciological correlations. This unit is considered an important source of mineral resources (e.g. coal, petroleum, groundwater). Besides, the rocks of the Tubarão Group crop out in densely populated areas with a large economic development, where programs for the use and occupation of the physical environment have just started.
