Abstract

The aim of this proposal is to conduct scientific, technological and ambiental researches, using sub-millimeter diagnostic provided by the new Sub-millimeter Solar Telescope (SST) at 212 GHz and 405 GHz. The SST construction has been completed and the instrument has been successfully assembled and tested at its final location at El Leoncito, San Juan, Argentine an Andes. Technological researches will consist to study the behavior of the SST and its sub-systems as a function of local weather parameters, to optimize the reflector performance at 212 and 405 GHz, and to define the observational command parameters with the objective to a flow remote controlled observations in the future. Radio-propagation and radio-meteorological research will be performed by studying the atmosphere effects on submm waves, the determination of the water-vapour content in the atmosphere and its variation with time and local parameters. The search for stratospheric ClO, the main artificial constituent responsible for ozonosphere depletion, is one important objective of ambiental investigations to be carried out by the SST. In solar physics research SST will provide unique information on the explosive component of solar flares, bringing new and fundamental clues for a better understanding of the primary energy release mechanisms. The detection of recombination lines at submm-waves, predicted for the solar atmosphere, will be attempted for the first time. Quiet Sun studies will also be conducted, in particular active region evolution, solar disk brightness, limb brightening, polar darkening and solar diameter measurements. It will be finalized the complementary project of solar optical observations using imaging spectro photometers. SST might become available fornon-solar, nighttime observations at a later phase of present project. (AU)
