Abstract

The central question of this theme project is the physical, spatial and functional restructuring of the metropolis of São Paulo in terms of the determinants that have been introduced into the relationship between the urbanized territory and the new economic structures and production systems. This research has as a main objective to analyze the physical, spatial and functional features of the changes now going on in the metropolis of São Paulo. The predominant/y industrial cycle, also often erred to as "industrializing industrialization," whose main trait was the expansion of the periphery and a deficient urbanification, is opening up a new cycle of change that we are characterizing from the perspective of production as the "industrialization of services." This project is also intended to be an aid to a return to metropolitan urban planning committed to public intervention in precarious and substandard territories and a basis for private investments. It is felt that the amount of information the agents of this process have will be directly proportional to the technical and political quality of the decisions addressed at improving the living conditions in the metropolis and in the Expanded Metropolitan Complex (EMC). The project consists of three lines of research. Taken jointly, they correspond to the contents described above and have specific characteristics that will be detailed: research line 1 - the urbanistic dimension of the metropolis, coordinator: full professor Regina Maria Prosperi Meyer; research line 2 - metropolis and urban environment, coordinator: full professor Marta Dora Grostein; research line 3 - the economics of urban intervention, coordinator: Dr. Ciro Biderman.
