Ecology of reservoirs

Abstract

The present thematic project is composed by five sub-projects: (l) ‘Historical evolution of the trophic and limnological relationships in the IT AIPU reservoir: top-down and bottom-up effects in the fish production’ where we try to understand the biotic and abiotic factors of the reservoir which determine its fish production. This project is very opportune because it aims to explain why the fish production of the Parana basin reservoirs is comparatively low, so much in national terms as international. This phenomenon has a great scientific, social and economical interest given the intense human occupation of that basin; (2) ‘Adaptation of the index of biotic integrity (IBI) to the reservoirs of Bariri, Ibitinga and Nova Avanhandava, in the Tiete river (SP)’, aiming to adapt the IBI in order to evaluate the trophic conditions of these three reservoirs by means of its fish fauna. This subject was already approached in a previous work by one member of our group and it is important to delineate optimal strategies for the use of the soil of the Tiete river basin which minimize its impact on its already impoverished fish fauna; (3) ‘Adaptation of the index of biotic integrity (IBI) to the reservoirs of PCH' s - usinas Batista and Jorda Flor, Rio Turvo (SP)’, which has a comparative sense with the previous project, because these two PCH' s of the Turvo river, in the municipal district of Pilar of the South (SP). Were never studied and no scientific collection of its fish fauna was accomplished up to now. It is worth to stand out that for the fact that the Turvo river do not cross any city in that reach, these two PCH' s present water in excellent condition, a rare fact in our State, which would serve as a type of ‘control’ for the previous project; (4) ‘Bio-economical evaluation of the small-scale fisheries of Barra Bonita reservoir (SP)’, whose main objective is to estimate the net profit of the fishers at Barra Bonita resevoir, in the Tiete river. To calculate the individual net profit it is taken into account the depreciation (R$) of their fishing gears. Without this caution, any calculation of the mean profit would be overestimated. This estimate will consider each one of the three areas of the reservoir: fluvial, transition and lacustrine. It is expected that the fishers of the lacustrine area (next to the dam) have smaller profit when fishing in the less productive area of the reservoir. Such project inserts in the social and economical problem of the unemployment in its rural area, where sugarcane monoculture prevails, and then fishing constitutes in the last job opportunity for many; (5) ‘Food webs assembly and their resistance to the introduction and exclusion of fish species: resulting properties of an individual-based model’, where one intends to develop a theoretical computational individual-based model, to evaluate the new food webs assembled due to invasions and exclusions of fish species. This subproject is very opportune, pioneer in our country, because invasions and exclusions of fish species is a common phenomenon in reservoirs, which are no-deliberate human experiments when considering its fish fauna. Under this strategy one intends to understand the intrincated dynamics of the original fish communities when faced to invaders. (AU)
