Abstract

The physiological changes that occur in the Central nervous System (CNS) induced by stress have been studied using several experimental models such as forced restraint, social isolation, forced swimming, among others. The type, intensity and frequency of the stressful stimulus applied may trigger distinct cellular mechanisms and induce different levels of cerebral alterations, being largely used to study the CNS pathologies. The glutamatergic excitatory neurotransmission is involved in several physiological and pathological functions of the CNS. The glutamate, by interacting with different receptors, has been associated to behavioral and/or neuronal changes induced by several factors such as anxiety, depression, stress, neurological and psychiatry disorders, neurodegeneration, among others. The understanding of the glutamatergic mechanism underlying those processes has been largely investigated through the studies of the knowledge of the specific receptors subtypes involved. These studies have demonstrated that both NMDA and non-NMDA (AMPA/KA) ionotropic receptors may be responsible for mediating those changes. However, additional studies are crucial for the complete understanding of these mechanisms, contributing to the development of drugs more suitable for treating the abnormalities of the CNS.The beta-amyloid precursor proteins family (APPs), known by its involvement with the neuritic plaques formation in Alzheimer’s disease, has also been associated to others processes, physiological and pathological, neurodegenerative or non-neurodegenerative. Several functions have been proposed to different APP isoforms in the CNS. Among them, the involvement with some neurotransmitters systems (dopamine, serotonin, glutamate and NO) in brain regions related to stress response such as amygdala, hypocampus, cortex, among others. However, the alterations of both classic neurotransmissions and APP isoforms induced by stress in the brain have not been studied yet. The aim of the present project begins this idea and the results obtained from its development will may contribute to understand the cause/consequence relation of the response to stress. (AU)
