Occurrence and estrogenic activity of endocrine disruptor chemicals in drinking water and in raw water supplies of the State of São Paulo

Abstract

Endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs) are a class of compounds able to simulate and/or modify the natural role of endogenous hormones many organisms, including human beings. The origin of EDCs in the aquatic environment is closely linked to the lack of proper sanitation practices, especially when raw sewage collection and treatment are ineffective, what is the case in the majority of the municipalities in the State of Sao Paulo. Once in the receiving waters, these compounds can be transferred to water treatment plants (WTP) and, if not removed, will reach the drinking water distribution system, thus exposing the population to low levels of these compounds. The aim of this project is to investigate the presence of EDC's in drinking water, as well as in different water bodies of the State of Sao Paulo used to water supply. In terms to obtain a realistic and updated diagnostics of the water quality as a function of the nature of the water supplier, different watersheds were selected according to the raw water origin used to distribution: a) counties where groundwater accounts for 100% of supply; b) counties were drinking water is from both the aquifer and surface water bodies, and c) counties where 100% of the supply is withdrawn from surface water. According to the degree of EDC exposure observed in each of these cases, it will be possible to establish a hierarchy of actions in terms to minimize human exposure to these compounds. Raw water samples will be collected in both superficial and underground water supplies, whereas drinking water will be sampled at the end of the pipe in the distribution network, as well as in the WTPs. EDCs determination will be accomplished standardized protocols of sampling, pre-treatment, extraction/concentration/ clean-up and identification/quantification by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS). Samples will also be tested for total estrogenic activity by means of YES assays. A comparison between the chemical stocks of selected EDCs quantified by the chemical method will be compared to the YES assay. Results will be expected to supply valuable information concerning EDC's exposure to drinking water consumers as a tool to support further normative and/or curative practices concerning the basic sanitation in Sao Paulo.
