Abstract

Staphylococcus is an important microorganism in the nocosomial environment and is mainly disseminated through health professionals' hands. This is the premise for the development of this study, which aims to: determine the prevalence of Staphylococcus in the mouth, using saliva analysis and identification and characterization of methicillin-resistant isolated bacteria, in health professionals and to verify the antimicrobial efficacy of antiseptic agents used in handwashing and to evaluate the perception of health team beliefs. A transversal study multicenter cross-sectional study will be carried out at three health institutions, in the cities: Goiânia-GO, Curitiba-PR e Ribeirão Preto-SP, between January 2006 and December 2007. We will collect 3 saliva samples of approximately 1500 professionals at the three study sites, resulting in about 4500 samples collected at 3 different times. Next, we will realize the isolation analyses and identification of clinical samples, genotyping and fenotyping, proceeding with quanti-qualitative analysis. Analytic discussion will be based on descriptive statistics, using SPSS 13.0. This project plans to construct an epidemiological database on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus, with a view to programming a prospective population surveillance system for these bacteria. We hope that the dissemination of studies resulting from this project will lead to the recognition and valuation of methicillin-resistant Staphyloccoccus as a relevant problem in health institutions.
