Abstract

Considering the economical importance of the photodegradation of polymers and the stabilization of this kind of material in same cases and the acceleration of the degradation process promoted by the presence of dyes, the main goal of the present proposal is to investigate the photodegradation of dyes contained in polymeric matrixes. The importance of these studies are related with the evaluation of the efficiency of the dye as a photoprotector and its own photostability since the dye can be decomposed by the light causing the discoloration of the material or in extreme cases the polymer degradation.Such studies will be performed using spectrophotometric techniques, laser flash photolysis, among others. The photodegradation products will be characterized in order to establish the photodegradation mechanisms.The interaction of other photostabilizers, usually used in polymeric formulations with the dyes, as well as their effects in the photolysis of the dyes will also be investigated, using the techn iques described above. The experiments will be performed in the laboratories of the Grupo de Fotoquímica - IQSC/USP, which have large experience in this kind of work. (AU)
