Abstract

Despite the DIAGNOdent has presented good results in detecting caries lesions, the device has showed an poor performance to measure minor mineral changes. For this fact, the association of the device with two fluorescent dyes was recently proposed in order to improve the detection of minor mineral loss caused by dental caries. Thus, the aims of the present study will be to evaluate the use of association between the fluorescent dyes with DIAGNOdent : (1) to detect mineral loss in natural smooth surface caries lesions, and (2) to detect artificial caries lesions around orthodontic brackets bonded with different orthodontic cements. For the aim (1), sixty primary teeth were selected. 0.2 mM TMPyP and 4 mM PPIX will be used as the dyes. Natural caries lesions will be measured with the DIAGNOdent, with and without the dyes. Teeth will be sectioned and evaluated with cross-sectional microhardness and polarized light microscopy. For the aim (2), 60 premolars will be selected. Orthodontic brackets will be bonded with 4 different cements. The samples will be submitted to a cariogenic chalange with a demineralizing solution (pH 4.5) during 16 days. After the demineralization, DIAGNOdent and DIAGNOdent associated with the TMPyP will be used to evaluate the caries lesions. Calcium loss will be measured by atomic emission spectroscopy and the lesion depth by light polarized microscopy. Statistical analyses to evaluate the methods performance in detecting natural lesions and caries lesions around brackets will be used. (AU)
