Abstract
Brazil has lured attention of Magnaporthe grisea researchers worldwide because many important crops, besides rice, have been affected by the pathogen. In this sense, blast was reported on wheat in mid 80's and on triticale in mid's 90, both fields in Parana state. In 2001 and 2002, barley fields in Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais, and Goias showed blast symptom on spikes. Now in 2005 crop season, different commercial fields of oat in Parana showed severe outbreak of blast disease. In spite of great host range of M grisea in Brazil with heavy yield loss, few studies have focused on the relationship among these new blast disease agents. Therefore, the present work aims to report for the first time the outbreak of blast disease on oat, a new host of the disease in Brazil. Moreover, the project has the purpose of describing the pathogenic, sexual, and molecular characteristics of the pathogen of oat and to compare with M grisea of rice, wheat, triticale, and barley.
