Abstract

The objective of this research project is to study the understandings, knowledge and practices of educators in a Mathematics Licentiate Degree course in a São Paulo State tertiary institution. Our aims were to describe and characterize the work carried out by educators in the disciplines of Math and Math Education in a Mathematics Licentiate Degree course; study the relationship between the tertiary educators and their knowledge; and identify the conditions in which these educators carry out their work. Our data collection involved analyzing documents provided by the tertiary institution, such as the pedagogical objectives of the course, teaching plans and meeting minutes; interviews with educators, the course coordinator and students; and observing classes taught by the educators. The analysis considers three dimensions: external, internal and relational. The external involves the tertiary institution and considers the conditions in which the educator works; the internal involves the educator and his or her actions and role in preparing future teachers; and the relational makes explicit the relationship between knowledge and the work of such educators.
