Abstract
In previous studies (MSc thesis financed by FAPESP) we focused the composition of the cell walls of 11 species of Pteridophytes, chosen according to the current knownledge about their phylogeny, which is based on morphological and molecular data. Our results suggest that there are two groups, one in which xyloglucan predominate and another where galactomannans are the main hemicellulosic polysaccharides. In the present proposal, we aim to advance our studies, extending our analyses to up to 100 species with the goal of understanding the evolution of hemicelluloses in Pteridophytes. To reach this goal, we will use techniques to analyse hemiceluloses directly through specific enzymatic hydrolysis and subsequent analyses of the fragments by mass spectrometry Maldi-TOF (AU)
