Abstract

Brazil is now improving the sanitary operations to enhance the production and trading markets by the Integrated Fruit Production Program (PIF). The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply has defined the policy of Integrated Production as a priority policy. Thus, the government and the productive chain are investing in programs for the eradication of pests and diseases that threaten orchards, besides the modernization of production, treatment, packaging, and storage processes. São Paulo State is the main banana producer in Brazil. Pesticides are being used for banana pest control, but on the other hand, they might contaminate the agricultural environment, including the banana crops, soil and water. The monitoring of pesticides in soil, sediment and surface water to assess the effectiveness of good agricultural practices (GAPs) in banana production is the objective of this project, in order to assist the Federal and State Brazilian Governments to enhance the national capabilities for developing strategies and implementation of the good agricultural practices and generation of data and technologies to support producer communities. These measurements may also favour, the consumers, and the reductions of the adverse impacts of contaminant residues in food, environment and public health. (AU)
