Abstract

American tegumentar leishmaniasis (ATL) is a endemic tropical antopozoonosis in Brazil. The immune response of ATL start from innate imune response which is performed by complement, immunoglobulins, macrophages, dendritic cells, and more recently the toll-like receptors (TLR). These receptors can recognize Leishmania antigens and develop a inflammatory response with a adpatative immune response followed by macrophage activation which determines the outcome od the disease. ALthough several animal model have described the presence of TLR, there is no study performed in human to determine the expression of these receptors in the ATL and their relationship with defense cells. The aim of this study is to evaluate the presence and expression of the TLR in the cutaneous form of the ATL from biopsies of patients during the diagnosis of the disease.
