Abstract

Fixation pattern in patients suffering from central vision loss, such as, age related macular degeneration and Stargart disease, has been intensively investigated in the past 100 years. It is well known that its features, like the size of the scotoma and the styablility of the fixation are crucial for the success of visual rehabilitation strategy. Patients with macular chorioretinitis due to toxoplasmosis, i.e. from birth, are an excellent model for investigations on the physiology of eccentric fixation, because of the well-delimitated macular lesion, absence of other causes of visual deficit (i.e. aging), and the fact of the eccentric fixation is developed at young ages. The aim of this study is to determine spatial characteristics of the eccentric fixation, such as fixation locus, distance to the retinal lesion and stability, size of scotomas, and investigate the relationship between these parameters and reading, and visual acuity in patients showing unilateral or bilateral disease.
