Effects of the stocking density of Prochilodus lineatus, curimbatá, breeders on the quality of oogenesis, eggs and larvae

Abstract

In captivity, the reproduction of migratory native fish remains as an obstacle to successfully farm these species. It is not uncommon to face reports of farmers and researchers about breeders that do not respond adequately to hormonal treatment, a fact that causes an inconstant availability of fingerlings, which impairs the overall production process of native species. In many cases, the problem is the poor oocyte quality and mainly its yolk content, which is essential for the embryos surveillance. In addition, there is an increasing number of evidences indicating that the inadequate management of migratory fish breeders can, through different mechanisms, negatively affect their reproductive performance, nevertheless, these arguments are still fuzzy and with little or no scientific basement. Thus the main purpose of this study is to evaluate comparatively the process of oocyte production, as well as and the quality of eggs, larvae and juvenile produced by curimbatá (Prochilodus lineatus) breeders kept into two distinct stocking densities (high and low density fish farm). The male breeders will be evaluated concerning the rates of sperm production through various parameters. It is intended, with the information generated, to arise information about the adequate conditions for P. lineatus breeders management (with scientific basement) and indirectly to other migratory species, aiming to obtain a regular annual production of eggs and larvae of excellent quality and in sufficient amount to attend the increasing demand for fingerlings of these species.
