Study of the brainstem auditory-evoked potential (BAEP) in dogs

Abstract

The brain stem auditory-evoked potential (BAEP) is an electrophysiologic test that detects and records the electrical activity in the auditory system from cochlea to the mid brain, generated after an acoustic stimulus applied to the external ear. BAEP is used as a routine test at most veterinary referral hospitals in other countries with more than 100 veterinary institutions using the test routinely in North America and Europe. As far as we know there are no institutions performing this test in animals in Brazil. BAEP testing is used to evaluate the different forms of auditory deficits (hereditary and senile), to determine the acoustic ability of animals, to testing for brain stem integrity and for the study of ototoxicity of many drugs. Thus, the many indications for use of this test, the inexistence of veterinary institutions performing it in Brazil, the variability of normal values showed in various studies and the necessity for each laboratory to obtain their own normative values for the use of BAEP testing, strongly supports this research. The aim of this study is to acquire basic and clinically useful data for our use of BAEP testing in normal and diseased dogs by determining parameters of normal audition and to characterize the latency and amplitude of waveforms generated with acoustic stimuli of varied intensity, in determining the occurrence of auditory problems in Dalmatian, Boxer and mixed breed dogs.
