Chronic pain in schizophrenics patients: prevalence and characteristics

Abstract

Chronic pain affects about 30% of adults and schizophrenia about 1%, but little is known about the co-morbidity of these conditions. Chronic pain causes great suffering, and physical, social, emotional and financial impairment to the patient and society and, in combination with psychiatric conditions, the damage may be even greater. Investigating the prevalence, characteristics of pain and the impact of pain on quality of life of these patients is the goal of this research. The study will be developed at the outpatient of the Institute of Psychiatry-University of São Paulo College of Medicine Clinics Hospital(IPq-HCFMUSP). Seven hundred and fifty seven patients diagnosed with schizophrenia are enrolled at IPqHC. The sample was calculated taking into account 25% as the prevalence of pain in psychiatric patients, error of 5% and reliability of 90% and will be required 203 subjects, which were selected by random selection. Patients will be interviewed using an instrument for characterizing socio-economic and pain and Quality of Life Scale WHO-QOL. Patients enrolled in IPq-HCFMUSP will be regularly included, age 18 years and over the ability to appropriately understand and communication. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Institution. Patients will be invited to participate and those ones who agree, will sign informed consent. (AU)
