Drugs administration practice in children attending day care centers: professional's perception

Abstract

At present, a great number of children stay a great part of their days into an education institution and many times they need to continue their medication treatment at the service. The practice of drug administration for children in day care centers/preschools has found some difficulties due to the health professional absence in the service or lack of knowledge of those who work there. Aiming to contribute to improve knowledge regarding this issue and to create proper actions for this practice in the institutions, the objectives of the present study are: 1) to describe the drug administration practice for children in child day care centers/preschools and, 2) to identify and analyze the needs related to drug administration realized by the professionals in charge of it. As a result, an exploratory and descriptive quantitative and qualitative research was proposed. This research will involve the participation of professionals who are in charge of drug administration for children in five units of the day care centers associated to a public university of the State of São Paulo. Some of these institutions have the presence of a health professional and others not, characterizing the different situations found in the current services. Data collection regarding characterization of the practice will be performed by means of a specific form answered by the professionals and the analysis of the material will involve control of frequency and variable crossing. Semi-structure interviews will be used to identify needs of the drug administration professionals and the analyzed material will be performed by means of the thematic content analysis. (AU)
