Abstract

The objective of this project is to investigate possible beneficial effects of rosmarinic acid as potential anti-vasoproliferative agent on the inflammatory and scarring processes of the anterior segment of the eye. The proposal is justified by the theoretical pathophysiological relationship between these two conditions, the increasing incidence of the successfully use of neovascularization inhibitors in other ocular diseases and the frequent difficulty in the management of wound scarring observed in ocular surgery, particularly those related to glaucoma. This project will consist of a comparative analysis of macroscopic and histological (including immune and genetic essays) findings of rabbit eyes underwent glaucoma fistulizing surgery, between animals that will be treated, or not, with rosmarinic acid applications. The study will include analysis of neutrophil migration, collagen deposition and expression of factors related to the inflammation process. A parallel perspective is the consolidation of the research line started recently, involving the study of modulators of the inflammation/ healing processes, especially those related to glaucoma surgery, with potential application in the clinical practice. In addition, it will enable the production and dissemination of scientific data through both presentations in scientific congresses and publication in refereed and indexed [in Medline and Web of Science (ISI)] journals.
