Impact of a nutritional intervention on sleepiness among shift workers

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of macronutrients changes on sleepiness among night workers. This study is a clinical randomized blinded trial with night security guards from a condominium in Bertioga city, located at the North coastline of São Paulo state. The whole population of guards will take part of this study, which is constituted by fifty two night security guards (00:00 to 08:00h). These workers will fill in a questionnaire about socioeconomic data, 24 hours dietary recall questionnaire and a sleepiness scale (Karolinska sleepiness scale). In addition, workers will wear actigraphs and fill out sleep logs to access their sleep wake-cycle. Their nutritional state will evaluate by means of anthropometric data. They will be divided in two groups (control and case) in order to evaluate the meal influence on sleepiness. Thus, a night meal will be offer to the workers during 5 days with one macronutrient predominance each time, every third week. The sleepiness evaluation will allow us to verify whether a macronutrient modifies workers sleepiness or not, as well as modifies the food intake on the next day. In spite of the descriptive analysis, the statistical analysis will include the means differences from sleepiness referred by the workers. (AU)
