Access methods for improving query performance of non-conventional databases


This research project is aimed at improving the query performance of non-conventional databases. In detail, this project focuses on the development of access methods to improve the query performance of geographical data warehouses (GDW) and biological databases (BDB). Access methods (i.e., indices) may reduce the sequential search computational cost, leading the search to portions of the database where the stored elements have higher similarity with the query and, therefore, improving query performance. The challenge is to develop access methods that improve the query performance of GDW and BDB. These indices should exploit the characteristics of these non-conventional databases and support exact and similarity searches. Although there are some related works in the literature, they face several limitations, such as a high computational cost to access the structure and a voluminous index. This research project aims at developing a new index for DWG and a new access method for BDB. (AU)
