Optical detection and control of magnetism in magnetic semiconductors and quantum dots

Abstract

Semiconductor materials with a potential for application in spintronics will be investigated by optical and magneto-optical techniques. The experiments include photoluminescence, photoluminescence excitation, optical absorption and transmission, reflectivity, magnetic dichroism and high resolution Faraday rotation, both in the continuous regime and in the time-resolved regime, with a resolution in the femtosecond range. The materials studied are magnetic semiconductor quantum structures, both magnetic and non-magnetic: bulk materials, and nanostructures (quantum wells and dots), of composition: europium chalcogenides and III-V's. The research aims at detecting and controlling the electronic and lattice magnetism by the use of light. (AU)
