Abstract

Traditionally, fisheries of the deep-sea crabs genus Chaceon is carried out in many parts of the world and more recently in Brazil. Although the potential of the Brazilian reservoir is huge, uncertainties as to the identity of the Chaceon species occurring in the Western Atlantic remain a serious obstacle to realize the great potential of crab fisheries in Brazil. Correct species identity is critical in terms of sustainable fisheries management. Additional difficulties refer to the identity of processed crabs (crab parts, triturated meat, etc). Therefore we propose to access the diversity of species in the genus Chaceon in the Western Atlantic through morphological and molecular data. The results will subsidize sustainable management and exploration of the resources. (AU)
