Abstract

Opinion Dynamics applies the methods of Statistical Mechanics to the description of the properties of large groups of people that can be described as a consequence of simple rules for the behavior of agents that update their opinions through the interaction with other agents. The area has been able to observe as consequence of those models phenomena like the emergence of consensus, voting distributions and a stronger tendency of elections to end close to 50% than it would be otherwise expected. This project aims to explore the area further, both from a theoretical and basic principles point of view, as well as the study of applications of models to different problems. The Continuous Opinions and Discrete Actions model (CODA) was recently proposed by myself, using principles of Decision Theory as basis. The model was able to explain the emergence of extremist opinions from a population with initial moderate beliefs. During this project, we will study extensions of the model and apply it to problems related to the choice of scientific theories and the choice between different products by consumers, among other problems. We will also investigate further the application of decision-theoretic rules as a basis for the development of a theory for modeling the Opinion Dynamics of rational agents. It is expected that a better theoretical background should contribute to more realistic opinion models. (AU)
