Peribulbar block with ropivacaine 0.75% for the extraction in dogs: standardization and comparison of techniques

Abstract

The peribulbar block as an complement of inhalational general anesthesia and can be useful for cataract extraction surgery in dogs. The aim of this study is to compare two techniques of single and double puncture and determined the ideal volume of ropivacaine 0,75% for peribulbar block. For this 24 dogs of different races, sex, age and weight with bilateral mature cataract, forwarded by surgical clinic service for small animals veterinary hospital of Araçatuba UNESP for performing cataract extraction surgery will be used. Patients preselected are allocated randomly in three different groups with eight dogs each: single puncture upper (PUS), single puncture low (PUI) and double puncture (PD). During the anesthetic protocol some parametric variables will be measured like as heart and breathing rate, body temperature, blood pressure, oxygen saturation in hemoglobin and blood gas analysis. Ophthalmic parameters will be assessed (degree of centralization of ocular bulb, conjunctival degree of bleeding and intra-ocular pressure) and the characteristics of block (latency period for motor block and motor and sensitive periods block). Data will be submitted to the analysis of variance and Tukey test. Non-parametric variables will be evaluated by Kruskall-Wallis method with 0,05 significany level. (AU)
