Abstract

Drugs dependence has serious personal, economic and social consequences, and their increased consumption by adolescents, particularly females, has been neglected among health professionals. This study aims to assess the oral health conditions of addiction patients and the effects of this dependence on oral microbiota and the occurrence of opportunistic microorganisms. All tests will be performed at the beginning and after the detoxification period. Data, about the health and socio-economic conditions, use of licit or illicit drugs of 200 patients with chemical dependence who started therapy for detoxification, will be obtained, such as an equal number of patients who not present chemical dependence, which will constitute the control group. Then, intraoral and extraoral clinical examinations will be performed. Samples of biofilm, saliva and mucous membranes will be transferred to medium for VMGA III medium and to ultrapure water at the beginning of the period of hospitalization and after six months. The same procedure will be performed with the members of the control group. The microbiota in VMGA 111 will be evaluated by culture on selective and non-selective media, while the samples in ultrapure water will be submitted to detection of selected opportunistic pathogens and oral microorganisms by PCR, nested PCR, seminested PCR, and real-time PCR. Odds ratios will be calculated to determine the relevance of inter-relationships among organisms and the significance of relationship between the clinic parameters and microbial parameters will be evaluated by multivariate logistic regression.
