Abstract

Dental caries is still considered one of the most prevalent oral diseases, despite the prevention methods used. Streptococcus mutans is associated with the etiology of dental caries, which is a chronic infectious disease associated with the progressive destruction of dental structures by the acidogenic/aciduric action of bacteria. Microbial adhesion is an important early event for successful colonization of dental structures. Considering the importance of biofilm control and the difficulties of individuals to perform proper oral hygiene, it is valid and necessary to associate, with traditional procedures, chemical methods as adjuvants for biofilm control. The recently launched Blue M® is a promising product in the treatment of oral diseases and its formulation contains an oxygen-based compound, essential in the synthesis and binding of collagen and a cofactor for the formation of nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide, substrate for the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which is fundamental for the fight against pathogenic bacteria. In order to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of Blue M®, the objectives of the present in vitro study will be divided into three: 1. determine the antimicrobial effect of different concentrations on Streptococcus mutans in planktonic and biofilm form; 2. evaluate the antibiofilm effect on preformed biofilms in bovine dentin discs; 3. evaluate the gbpA virulence factor in S. mutans in the presence of Blue M® by real time PCR. The numerical data obtained by applying the laboratory protocols will be subjected to specific statistical analysis using the GraphPad Prism 6 software, and all tests of this study will be applied with a significance level of 5% (p <0.05).
