Ceramic inlay restorations in premolars: the effect of cementation strategy and mechanical cycling on the adhesive resistance between dentin and restoration

Abstract

Tensions generated by occlusal loads are the main cause of failure in inlay restorations. The objective of this study is to evaluate the union resistance between dentin and ceramic restoration, regarding cementation strategy and mechanical cycling in injected ceramic inlays. For this, 60 higid upper premolars will receive MOD preparations, will be molded, and inlay restorations will be made. The samples will be divided into three groups (N=20): Group 1: conventional cementation (adhesive on dentin surface and ceramic conditioning, using adhesive system and conventional resin cement), Group 2: simplified cementation (no dentin and ceramic conditioning, using a simplified resin cement), Group 3: modified simplified cementation (only ceramic conditioning). Half of the specimens in each group will be without cycling (control). The other half will be submitted to mechanical cycling, applying load on the cusps simulating in vitro 12 years of clinical service approximately. Thus, the samples will be selected in 2 axes in order to obtain specimens: vestibular dentin - restoration - lingual dentin, with 1mm2 of interfacial area, which will be submitted to the micro-traction test (0.5mm/mih). The origin of possible fractures will be determined by fractography analysis assisted by optical and scanning electron microscope. Besides that, in order to evaluate the distribution of tensions generated by occlusal loads, a three-dimensional finite element will be made with the assistance of Computer Aided Design resources. Statistical analysis of the data to be applied will be posteriorly designated. (AU)
