Population survey of food security and insecurity in Campinas, São Paulo: determinants, health consequences and evolution of prevalence patterns from 2003 to 2009

Abstract

Although the city of Campinas ranks 11th in participation in the GNP of Brazil (IBGE, 2000), data from a 2003 population survey that included a direct measure of food security (the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale) showed large inequalities in income distribution, generating social vulnerability and negative impact on food access for a portion of the population. The objectives of this project are: to study the profile of food security 2009, its determinants and consequences, besides comparing 2009 data with those from 2003, and to analyze the factors that conditioned changes identified in this period. The hypothesis to be analyzed is that, despite negative factors occurring in this period, such as the economic crisis and increases in food prices, the prevalence of food insecurity in the municipality has decreased due to the expansion of public policies, real gains in income, and families' strategies to cope with limited food access. The same methods and procedures used in 2003 will be used in this study to guarantee comparability. A two-stage sampling scheme will be applied to randomly select 1010 households, with the household being the sampling unit. Results will provide public policymakers with scientific evidence on which to base decision-making. (AU)
