Additives on the ensilage of sugar cane: control of alcoholic fermentation; nutritional value of silages; sheep and cattle performance; cattle meat quality

Abstract

The viability of sugar cane use as silage depends on alcoholic fermentation control during conservation. Several additives have been evaluated for that purpose but results indicate the necessity to adjust dosages of some products and test new ones, in order to achieve more efficiency in the process. The lack of data and variability in experimental results indicate the necessity of more research works in this area, including evaluation of performance and meat quality of sheep and cattle fed these silages. Considering also that evaluation of additives may be difficulted by variation in method of laboratorial silage production and ethanol analysis in the silages, this research project is proposed with the objective to evaluate: influence of micro silo type and method of silage extract preparation over, respectively, production and recover of ethanol in sugar cane silages; evaluate a new additive (ammonium propionate) and determine the best proportion of promising additives in a mixture (urea and sodium benzoate); broaden the data base on the effects of applying calcium oxide (CaO) in the ensilage of sugar cane; evaluate the nutritional value of silages and performance of sheep and beef cattle fed rations containing treated sugar cane silages; evaluate the effect of feeding sugar cane silages on cattle meat quality.
