Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic disease, characterized by gradual loss of articular cartilage, which assails people from the fourth decade of life, involving morphologic and functional limitations. This study aims at correlating the morphologic alterations in the articular cartilage of the knee identified through Magnetic Resonance Imaging and sensorimotor control with inflammatory and degenerative markers of blood plasma and knee synovial fluid of subjects suffering from Osteoarthritis degrees I and II. To achieve our goals, we will selected 40 male subjects with age between 40 to 65 years, divided in two groups: 1) control group (n=20) formed by healthy subjects; and 2) Osteoarthritis group (n=20) formed by subjects suffering from Osteoarthritis degrees I and II. Every subject will be selected through physical and radiograph assessments. Beforehand the sensorimotor tests, we will collect some blood from antecubital fossa and puncture some knee synovial fluid for cytokines (TNF-a, IL-1a, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, IL-10, TGF-b) analysis by the ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay) method. In addition, we will evaluate the presence of glycosaminoglycans in the synovial fluid by measuring the absorbance of samples that were previously stained with dimethylmethylene blue (DMMB). Subjects will carry out a sensorimotor test in a force platform (AMTI OR6 model) with dynamic movement and erect position maintenance with unipodal and bipodal support (with both opened and closed eyes) and a force accuracy and steadiness test in an Isokinetic Dynamometer (Biodex Multi Joint System 3, Biodex Medical Systems Inc.) of knee extensor muscles in isometric, concentric and eccentric exercises at 50% of maximum force at 20º/s.
