Abstract

The "Maciço de Piedade", "Serra de Paranapiacaba", has a high relief and heterogeneous, contributing to formation of many small water courses. This region is a watershed of the basins of rivers Tietê, Paranapanema and Ribeira de Iguape. This encourages a comparative study of fish communities in headwaters with the evaluation of physical and biotic integrity of streams belonging to the three watersheds. We will quantify the degree of deviation of "integrity" in terms of non-natural modifications, identify the main factors of these changes and develop a monitoring protocol that can be used in the region. We will be selected stretches of 100 m in length in several streams that make up 4 sub-basins (Sorocaba, Pirapora, Turvo and Juquiá). The physical integrity in these sections will be evaluated by quantification of some structures in the channel (edge, substrate and flow) and the surrounding (riparian vegetation and plant cover), with the objective of developing an Index of Physical Habitat (IPH). The fish fauna will be sampled in these parts, during dry and rainy seasons of the years 2010 and 2011, using an electric fishing. The biotic integrity will be assessed by the selection of attributes (metrics) of the assemblages of fish that can be used in the adaptation of an Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI). The selection of metrics that will compose the IBI we will be done through multivariate analysis (PCA and CCA) and the use of correlation and concordance indices. Each metric is scored with the values 1, 3 or 5, as it approaches the best conditions observed. The sum of these metrics will compose the IBI. The IBI is validated by comparison with the IPH using the Kendall concordance coefficient. The average values of IBI, according to the four sub-basins will be compared by a one-way ANOVA, while the effects of seasonality and anual persistence with repeated measures ANOVA. The calculation of annual and seasonal variation of the IBI we will use data collected biannually in streams during the years 2010 and 2011. (AU)
