Abstract

One of the main factors that compromise the income and the quality of the maize production is the occurrence of pest. The principal pests are Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith), Helicoverpa zea (Bod.) and Diatraea saccharalis (Fab.). The S. frugiperda when in favorable conditions, it increases its population, destroying leaves and cartridge, reduced the production of grains. With the advent of the biotechnology, new tactics of control of pests were developed, that consists of the resistant plants genetically modified the insects. Through refined techniques of laboratory, a gene of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bt) was introduced in plants of maize, having given origin to the maize genetically modified, conferring high standard of resistance of the plant to some species of lepidopteran-pest. This technology already comes being used for diverse countries to some years. However, in Brazil this technology alone was set free for the commercialization recently and in such a way few are the information on its potential of control of pests related to our conditions. For this, transgenic hybrid of different companies and its respective conventional materials will be installed in 4 localities of the state of São Paulo. Moreover, parcels of these combinations sprayed or with not insecticides. The damages caused for the S. frugiperda, H. zea and D. saccharalis will be evaluated. One expects that with these results it is possible to verify the efficiency of the transgenic materials and its cost/benefit. (AU)
