Abstract

A number of biomaterials used as bone substitutes and to improve bone repair and formation have been used, especially for ridge reconstruction aiming oral rehabilitation with end osseous implants. However, their biological behavior in molecular level needs more investigation. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the biocompatibility of materials commonly used in clinical practice: high density porous polyethylene (HDPP), inorganic bovine hydroxyapatite and B-tricalcium phosphate, comparing with particulate autogenous bone. In this way, New Zealand rabbits will receive HDPP implants in alveolar ridge (masticatory mucosa), or inorganic bovine hydroxyapatite or B-tricalcium phosphate, both implanted in maxillary sinus with or without a non-resorbable membrane. After 7, 15, 45, and 90 days the animals will be sacrificed and the specimens retrieved to be evaluated in their morphological and immunohistochemical aspects under optical microscope. (AU)
